Beauty, Cigarettes, Tattoos, & Grunge

Adorable Frances with mother Courtney
Frances Bean Cobain just turned 19 years old.  No, I'm serious.  Frances could have been a Paris Hilton or a Kim Kardashian by now, but chose to lead a "normal" life.  Well, she's only 19, so I guess that could change.  But considering she has been famous her whole life, if she were fame hungry, she could have taken advantage of that a long time ago.  According to her mother, Courtney Love, Frances was supposedly offered the lead roles in both Twilight and in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland.  Is this true?!  I have no idea.  But those are two offers that would be hard to turn down.

Frances hasn't been in the media too much throughout her life thus far.  She has done a handful of magazine interviews and photo shoots, had a Twitter tiff with Ali Lohan, and has indirectly been in the news, mainly because of Courtney Love's wild antics.  In 2009, Frances' paternal grandmother and aunt became her temporary co-guardians, and Courtney was issued a temporary restraining order.  I believe that Frances and Courtney have been estranged ever since, but I'm not too sure about that.

I don't know too much about Frances and what her aspirations are, but I will make the assumption that she likes art, music, and fashion.  In 2010 she had an art show, featuring various notebook drawings, at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles, CA.  Also in 2010, Frances was one of 20 musicians whose voices were mixed together for the song, "My Space" by band Evelyn Evelyn.  As for fashion, she seems to know what she’s doing in that department.  Fashion, like beauty, is definitely subjective; everyone has their own tastes and opinions.  Frances has definitely gone through different style phases, and there are pictures to prove it.   How fun.  I, on the other hand, live in the very real world, where I can’t even afford to get my hair done.  It’s been almost a year since I’ve been to a salon.  That’s a true story.  It’s ok, I can live vicariously through people who can afford to change their look every five minutes, while I continue to use boxed hair dye.

August 2011 was a big month for Frances.  Or at least the Internet made it seem that way.  Not only did she have a birthday but she also posed for two artistic photo shoots, each being drastically different.  Photographer Rocky Schenck took a series of retro glamour-style shots of Frances, while photographer Hedi Slimane took photos of Frances showing her raw, grungy side.  Each series of photos feature Frances' blunt beauty while capturing that mysterious quality she has about her, which only adds to her intrigue.

Who knows what Frances will be doing in the future.  Acting, singing, drawing, whoring, we just don’t know.  But in all seriousness, whatever direction Frances does decide to go in, I hope it’s a positive one.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches: Deliciously Unsatisfying

Photograph from http://www.istockphoto.com/
Why is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (a.k.a. pb&j) so damn good?  YUM!  Just typing peanut butter and jelly makes my mouth water!  But it also makes me sad because currently, I am out of bread.  Actually, what really makes me sad (because I can always go buy bread-duh) is that I’m trying to lose weight, and having the components to produce a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in my midst wouldn’t help my already hard struggle.  Losing weight is a challenge and I find that it makes things a little bit easier for me, not to have certain foods in my apartment, to prevent a binging episode.  Although to be perfectly honest, I can binge on anything.
I love peanut butter; my favorite brand is Jif.  I prefer creamy to chunky but sometimes I don’t mind the chunk.  I have tried various brands, unprocessed and processed, and I always go back to sweet, processed, good ol’ Jif.  Anyway, I could probably eat a spoonful of peanut butter and follow it with some milk and repeat that process all day long.  Bread is another thing that I love!  But for the last few months I haven’t really been buying bread because I eat way too much of it.  I love all kinds of bread, as well as all kinds of cheese-but that has nothing to do with this.  Anyway, for a pb&j my all time favorite bread to use is just fluffy white bread.  Well, since I’ve been brainwashed to feel like I’m not allowed to buy white bread I’ve gotten used to using whole wheat bread, which is good too.  I hate eating a pb&j on toasted bread or on sour dough bread.  Yuck!
Growing up, my Mom mostly bought grape jelly, which I liked and probably never cared to change.  But in the last couple of years I somehow switched over to strawberry jelly.  I love Smucker’s Strawberry Jam, it’s SO good; I love the chunks of strawberries.
What’s negative about eating a pb&j is that it’s a lot of calories and it’s not very filling.  The peanut butter is about 190 calories for 2 tablespoons, the jelly is about 50 calories for a tablespoon, and the bread is usually around 200 calories for two slices, which equals about 440 calories altogether.  To know how much you’re eating it’s definitely a good idea to measure the peanut butter and the jelly; trust me, eyeballing it can be deceiving.  A serving of each is enough to taste both components but if I don’t measure (and when losing weight isn’t a consideration) I slob that peanut butter and jelly on those slices of bread like I'm a cavewoman.  I love it thick, smooshy, and probably 1000 calories.  Plus, I can’t eat a pb&j without a glass of milk, so that’s another 90 calories for a cup (if drinking non-fat milk).  So having a pb&j with a cup of milk is around 540 calories, which is an ok amount of calories to eat for a meal.  But does anyone eat a pb&j for a meal besides a kindergartener?   And I’ll bet that even a kindergartener has a side of some sort with that pb&j.
I’ve tried eating just a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for a meal and it’s hard, especially if I’m measuring the amounts I’m spreading on the bread.  I remember telling one of my slender friends, who always wants to talk about the 5 lbs. she needs to lose, that I had a pb&j for lunch and she even thought that was nuts.  “You had that for a meal?  That’s more of a snack!”  You would think that  a pb&j would be the perfect snack, but it has too many calories to be a snack for someone who is trying to eat around 1500 calories a day.  And who knows, maybe my thin friend was bullshitting me.  Kind of like when you have a classmate who is worried because he/she didn’t study for that test; they get a B+ and then they complain that it isn’t an A.  Annoying.  Lets get rid of the naiveté, my friend is thin, she probably has half a pb&j and an apple for lunch but likes to pretend that she eats whole pb&j's for snacks.  I’m on to her.
I don’t know if there’s a solution for this, and it doesn’t really matter because this isn’t a life or death situation.  But what I could do is buy unprocessed, no sugar added peanut butter and low sugar jelly to knock off some of the calories (not going to happen); I could eat a pb&j as a snack and exercise more (maybe); or I could eat the pb&j for a meal with some fruit and/or vegetables, and if I’m still hungry afterwards?  Be hungry and suck it up.  I guess it’s as simple as that.

Happy Birthday Jonathan Taylor Thomas

Venice Beach Photo Shoot, Early 1990's
I know I’m not the only one who can’t believe that JTT is thirty years old today.  I became one of his many obsessed fans nearly twenty years ago.  Nuts, is what it is.  What’s even more nuts, is that in a time when it seems like celebrities have absolutely no privacy, it is nearly impossible to find any current information about Jonathan.  I know that he is not currently in the limelight but damn; I know I'm not the only one who's curious.
Home Improvement Cast, ABC, Early 1990's
Jonathan is best known for playing Randy Taylor on the TV series Home Improvement starring Tim Allen and Patricia Richardson.  In the first few seasons, Randy was a cute kid with a raspy voice who was sarcastic and witty.  I was attracted to not only his adorable face but also the character he played; regardless if it wasn’t really who he was, it didn’t matter to me -I was ten.  Jonathan was a natural actor, which really showed in the first few seasons of the show.  As he entered his awkward teenage years, his acting also got a little awkward, but I was a devoted fan and loved him anyway.
He made a few movies during his massive popularity, which were mostly mediocre family films.  They may not have been the most amazing movies in the world, but they weren't horrible.  Even though Jonathan was almost as popular as Justin Bieber is now, I don't think any of his movies were as successful as Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, except for maybe The Lion King, where he was the voice of young Simba.
Milk Ad, 1997
During the last season of Home Improvement, Jonathan decided to leave the show early to focus on school.  He also decided to make a couple of more mediocre movies.  In 1998, I remember reading that he was going to play a bisexual street hustler in the film, Speedway Junky.  I was so excited because I thought that by doing something edgy, he would show that he can be a diverse, serious actor.  No, not so much.  I’m sorry, but his part in that movie was embarrassing, I couldn’t take him seriously at all.  At least practice how to smoke a cigarette for Christ’s sake.  Even after watching this awful movie, I remained a fan.  It's called dedication folks.
In 2000, he was in a Showtime movie called Common Ground, which dealt with several stories about people and their experiences being Gay.  This is what then sparked rumors that Jonathan might be Gay.  Around this time, he was on the cover of The Advocate and denied the rumors, but the rumor is still out there.  Do I care if he’s Gay?  Absolutely not.  Do I want to know if he’s Gay?  Absolutely.  I'm not afraid to admit that I'm a bit of a fag hag, so I would probably like him even more if he were Gay.  Since then he has done some voice over work, made some short films, and guest starred on a few TV shows.  He has pretty much been M.I.A. since 2005.

Like many other pathetic people out there, every so often I Google Jonathan’s name to see if there’s any news; there’s usually nothing.  But his name has been floating around the Internet lately.  Mostly due to other celebrities, who have recently mentioned that Jonathan was one of their celebrity crushes growing up:  Lea Michelle, Katy Perry, and Hilary Duff, to name a few.  Perez Hilton also recently mentioned Jonathan on his blog and on his Twitter asking, “where is JTT?” which created a lot of buzz, since Perez has so many lemmings followers.
I was really excited when a couple of weeks ago I found Patricia Richardson on Twitter.  After browsing through her page, I was excited to see some recent pictures of Jonathan and the rest of the Home Improvement cast, which were taken at an Entertainment Weekly photo shoot.  The pictures aren't the best quality and Jonathan doesn’t look his best but it was cool to finally see a recent picture.  It has been years people!  It can also lay to rest the rumor that Jonathan and Tim don’t speak to each other anymore, due to Jonathan exiting Home Improvement during the last season.  One of the pictures' includes the whole cast, which blurrily shows everyone to look quite happy together.  I was going to post the pictures here, but I read on Patricia's Twitter that Entertainment Weekly asked her to take the pictures down.  So I'm not going to post them but they are all over the Internet.  And any day now, I'm assuming that Entertainment Weekly will be releasing the pictures that were taken during that photo shoot, either online or in an upcoming issue of their magazine.
So what else am I nosey curious about?  So, did he go to both Harvard and Columbia?  Did he graduate from anywhere?  Does he have a girlfriend?  A boyfriend?  Did he ever learn how to properly smoke a cigarette?  What the hell is he doing now?  Is he ever going to make another movie?  Does he want to go grab a drink with me?
Is that a cigarette?  I guess he learned how.
The Internet existed in the ‘90’s but it was nowhere near what it is today.  Back then, if Jonathan had had a Twitter account, I think I would have died.  In a way, I kind of like how mysterious he is; it makes him more interesting.  I think in the long run it’s better not to know everything about an actor.  Will I ever be able to watch a movie with Lindsay Lohan and not think, “I’m watching Lindsay Lohan?”  Probably not.  It’s not good to know everything about these peoples’ personal lives.  And this also goes to show, that if you don’t want to be in the public eye, you really don’t have to be.
I would be happy to see Jonathan Taylor Thomas make a positive comeback in the entertainment industry, even if that means he makes some more mediocre movies.  Bring 'em on!  Oh, and I would also like to wish him a very happy birthday.

The cast of Home Improvement will be included in a Reunions issue of Entertainment Weekly, due out October 7.  Some new stuff that I've learned about Jonathan in the last couple of days...  He attended Harvard from 2000-2002, spending one semester abroad at the University of St Andrews in Scotland; he eventually graduated from Columbia University in 2010.  Also, this photo shoot was the first time Tim Allen and Patricia Richardson had seen Jonathan since 1998, when he left Home Improvement.  Craziness.
